Fair WarnIng was Van Halen’s least commercially successful album, from the perspective of record sales. It is also my personal favorite, and is typically the favorite of anyone that plays guitar and loves Van Halen. Fair Warning was also all Ed. He wanted to get away from the cover songs that DLR was obsessed with and take the band in a new, harder direction. Ed was deep in his coke addiction when writing it and the result was a darker, edgier sound that is not present on any other VH album. Themes of violence and pornography permeate the album. Both DLR and Ted weren’t happy with this new direction for the band and the subsequent lack of sales success led to a “we told you so” moment between Ed and Templeman/Roth. Ed was also sick of the manner in which Ted and DLR simply crashed VH albums thru the studio at a break neck pace, resulting a less than stellar production quality that Ed loathed. These were two of the main issues that would eventually lead to Roths departure. It also resulted in VH returning to its earlier format of lighthearted songs, with lots of cover songs for Diver Down. Ed built his new 5150 studio during the development of Fair Warning and when Ted/Roth once again returned to their earlier methods of production on Diver Down, Ed stole the tapes and absconded with them to his new studio, locking himself inside. When Ted and Roth came knocking at 5150, asking for the tapes back, Ed threatened to burn them. Both Fair Warning and Diver Down were part and parcel of the schism that was at work in the band. I believe that Fair Warning is Van Halen’s finest work… and Ed’s personal showcase of what a truly gifted musician he was. But that’s just my personal opinion.

Sounds intentional in the final song but here it sounds more like a hesitation. I think it works perfectly either way.
